Thermal Breaks in Aluminium Windows and Doors, Explained

Aug 5, 2024

Aluminium is strong, light and long lasting, but it also carries heat well. A thermal break deals with that. This guide explains what a thermal break is, what it does for comfort and energy use, and where it fits in the IKON range.

What is a thermal break?

A thermal break is an insulating strip, usually polyamide, built into the aluminium frame between the outside and the inside. Think of it like an electrical break: it stops heat crossing from outside to inside through the metal, so the inner part of the frame stays closer to room temperature.

What it does for a home

  • Comfort: the inner frame stays closer to room temperature, so there are fewer cold spots near the glass in winter.
  • Energy use: less heat moves through the frame, so heating and cooling work less hard.
  • Condensation: a warmer inner frame lowers the chance of condensation forming on the frame on cold mornings.

The frame is half the story

Glass makes up most of a large opening, so the glass matters as much as the frame. A thermal break works together with double glazing and the right performance glass. Read more about glass choices on our Performance Glass page.

Where it fits in the IKON range

FINO, our slimline range, is thermally broken and comes double glazed as standard. The slim frame is what you see. The thermal break and the double glazing are why it performs, giving more view with real comfort inside. See the FINO Sliding Door and FINO Tilt & Turn and Tilt Only windows.

If thermal performance is a key target on your project, tell us at concept stage and we will help you choose the system and the glass that suit the design.

When a thermal break makes sense

  • Highveld homes with cold winter nights and hot, sunny days.
  • Rooms with large areas of glass facing north or west.
  • Projects working to the energy requirements of SANS 10400-XA.
  • Bedrooms and living spaces where comfort close to the glass matters.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thermal break the same as double glazing?

No. Double glazing insulates the glass. A thermal break insulates the aluminium frame. FINO has both as standard.

Which IKON systems are thermally broken?

FINO, our slimline range, is thermally broken.

Does a thermal break change how the frame looks?

No. The insulating strip sits inside the profile, so the visible frame and its finish look the same.

Who fits IKON windows and doors?

IKON Aluminium South Africa is a specialist window and door manufacturer. Fitting is done by accredited IKON installation partners.
