The rubber that keeps the weather out matters as much as the frame. Gaskets are easy to overlook, yet they decide how a frame performs after years in the sun. This guide explains what EPDM gaskets are, why they last, and how they work with the locking on IKON systems.
Why gaskets fail
Cheaper gasket materials harden, crack and shrink under UV and heat. As they shrink, gaps open in the corners, and wind, dust and water start to find their way in. The frame may still look good, but it no longer closes tight.
What EPDM is
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber that copes well with sun, ozone and temperature swings. It stays flexible from cold winter nights to hot summer days, so it keeps pressing against the frame instead of pulling away from it.
What EPDM gaskets do for a home
- Weather resistance: they help keep wind, dust and rain out.
- Comfort: fewer draughts means more stable indoor temperatures.
- Quiet: a tight closing frame helps reduce outside noise.
- Long life: they do not shrink in the corners, so fewer replacements over time.
Gaskets and locking work together
A gasket needs pressure to do its job. On IKON systems, multi-point locking pulls the sash or leaf tight against the gaskets. The LARGO Hinged Door has a 3-point lock that engages top, middle and bottom at the same time, and the LARGO Top Hung window uses EPDM gaskets with multi-point locking along the sash.
What architects say
“Using IKON AlUMINIUM™ has greatly complemented our approach to selecting the best products for this luxurious home. The house features large spans that required substantial openings, which IKON AlUMINIUM™ can provide. Their products ensure that these heavy-duty doors and windows operate smoothly, thanks to their superior hardware, tracks, and framework. IKON AlUMINIUM™ unique gaskets and flush sills also offer excellent resistance against air leaks and weather infiltration, contributing to controlled thermal comfort throughout the house.”

Frequently asked questions
What does EPDM stand for?
Ethylene propylene diene monomer, a synthetic rubber that resists UV, ozone and temperature changes.
Why do some window gaskets shrink?
Lower-grade materials harden and shrink under UV and heat, which opens gaps in the corners. EPDM stays flexible, so it keeps its shape.
Do IKON windows and doors use EPDM gaskets?
Yes. IKON uses EPDM gaskets, for example on the LARGO Sliding Door, the LARGO Pivot Door and the LARGO Top Hung window, where multi-point locking pulls the sash tight against them.
