Bring Fenestration Into the Conversation Earlier

Oct 28, 2026

On a drawing, a large glazed opening looks beautifully straightforward. A few lines frame the view, connect the living space to the garden and establish the architectural intent.

Making that opening work deserves a conversation well before it becomes a purchasing decision.

Too often, detailed fenestration discussions begin when the opening has already been built. The floor levels are established, the structural work is complete and the team is looking for a system that will fit.

At that point, choices become narrower. Details that could have been coordinated early become compromises to manage on site.

A flush threshold is a good example. The visible result may be a clean transition between inside and outside, but achieving it requires agreement on the relationship between the door system, floor finishes, drainage and water management. Those decisions involve more than the window and door manufacturer.

The same applies to large sliding panels and corner openings. Panel sizes, opening configurations, structural interfaces and installation access all deserve attention while the design can still accommodate them.

This does not mean asking architects to design around a manufacturer’s limitations. It means bringing the right technical knowledge into the project early enough to support what the architect wants to achieve.

There is also a commercial benefit: a clearer brief makes quotations more meaningful. When the intended system, configuration, finish and scope are understood, the discussion can move beyond comparing totals for potentially different solutions.

In my view, the fenestration specialist should be part of the design conversation before the project reaches the stage of “please quote these openings”.

Ask what needs to be resolved now. Ask which decisions affect other trades. Ask where the proposed detail needs further development.

The most valuable contribution a manufacturer makes may happen long before anything is built on site.

It happens when there is still time to get the detail right.
